Few Japanese dance works take on politics or society, but SHIMOJIMA Reisa, leader of the Kedagoro dance troupe, has built a strong reputation at home and abroad for her thought-provoking works, such as her exploration of the subway sarin attack by a murderous cult in her previous piece sky.
Because Kazcause takes its motif from real-life murderer FUKUDA Kazuko, who managed to evade the police for 15 years by altering her features through plastic surgery. Her arrest just before the end of the statute of limitations made waves at the time. In this work, the dancer runs away and goes into hiding by jumping onto a pipe attached to the ceiling in an astounding show of three-dimensional movement.
The concept of gravity, frequently mentioned in the work, could symbolize our inability to escape no matter how hard we try. In that sense, it may represent a sense of guilt. When FUKUDA was serving in prison for robbery in her younger days, she was also victim of systematic rapes. That may have been the driving force behind her attempt to flee the police. The two male dancers in this work can be seen as symbols of the male-dominated society and violence that, like gravity, women can never escape.
